Dictionaries for Third Graders

Culbertson Elementary School reading specialist Heather Lyon enjoyed sharing stories about children with Joe Patti of the Broomall Rotary Club when he delivered the club’s annual donation of dictionaries to the school.

This is the third time he has brought dictionaries to Culbertson and the other schools in the Marple Newtown School District. About 250 copies of the dictionary are provided at no cost to the schools or students.

“These books are designed by educational professionals especially for third graders,” said Joe. “It’s an important time in their lives for developing learning skills and we want to do what we can to assist them.”

Lyons added, “While we certainly encourage children to be proficient in computer use, we also want them to know the principals and basics of researching information in this traditional manner. The need for and comfort of reading books is a fundamental part of every person’s life.”

The Broomall Rotary Club conducts other activities for children as well. They include the Junior Olympics, Pictures with Santa, the Interact Club, contributions to the Marple Public Library, little league teams and certain special projects.
