RE to Joan: because there are no sidewalks. The sidewalks just end & you fourced into the streets. These towns are not built for pedesterians & young bike riders. I live nearby & know.

You ride it on the sidewalk...children shouldn't ride their bikes in the street because it will lead to be being hit by a car...

Lets not worry about where he should be riding his bike at. He is my sons friend, and this has impacted us all. Lets just pray he can make a full recovery. And pray for the family as well.

I hope the little guy makes a full recovery. I was detoured off of Sproul because of this incident. Of course kids don't belong in the street but I remember venturing off my block on my bike when I wasn't allowed to do so.

They can cross right here: Push the button, light turns red in all directions and you cross.
Amazing

Sproul Rd is such a busy rd too many accidents they should reduce the speed limit in certain areas. My thoughts and prayers are w/Allen and his family

The accident happened and is over with. Now is the time for prayers and support for Allen and his family. Those who choose to criticize the child for riding his bike and getting hit are simply insensitive individuals.

Our prayers are with Allen and his family. He is a great kid. That street is entirely too dangerous 3rd person hit in a year. Speed limit is 40 mph which is too high for a residential area. There is no safe place to cross on that stretch of road. He was at the traffic light trying to cross - the person who hit him was going a high speed to cut his bike in half.

It's actually illegal to ride your bike on the sidewalk. Sad that the kids have to ride their bikes in the street, as there are no bike paths of any kind appropriate for biking. There have been a lot of pedestrian and bike incidents in Marple and Newtown. Maybe a sign that we should be a little more pedestrian/bike friendly. Stop blaming the parents. I hope and pray that he will be okay.

Julia, It's the DRIVER who should be aware of everything, not 10 year old kids. Kids are kids... Grown ups should know better & are suppose to drive defensively. (You also sound extremely intelligent....)
Hopefully Alan & his family will start the healing process & all will be alright.

A few thoughts...Great news that this little boy is on the mend. Nothing worse than a hurt child. Maybe a few prayers for the man that hit him. It was an accident as reported. Unlike many others recently, he stopped. As far as the question of where children should ride there bikes, I think the first answer is NO WHERE NEAR Sproul Road!. There are plenty of streets on wither side of 320 for a 10 year old to safely ride. And, if for some reason a 10 year old needs to cross Sproul, there are lights at Cedar Grove Road and Paxon Hollow Road. A lesson to all of us parents about safety (Helmet!).

JDBroomall - How do you know he was even trying to cross the street?? If you ever walked on that sidewalk the bushes are all overgrown and stab you in the face and you have to veer into the street.

I'm appalled at some of the comments being made on this blog. An extremely close friend of the family and one who has visited Allen everyday I can assure you that Allen will recover with time. In an attempt to protect him and his family's privacy (which everyone here should be doing) Amanda is the only one who is relatively close to his injuries. He does have a broken wrist and broken leg. He does have serious injuries however he does not have a broken back or broken ribs. He was not run over by a car as stated in some of the news reports. Shame on the media for not reporting accurately!
I'm also not certain why the speculation that he was permitted to ride along or cross 320. He wasn't. He is anxious to see his friends. When he is able to see them, I'm certain that information will be available to you. For now, he is being surrounded with love by his family and close friends of the family. If you would like to help the family or send good wishes, I'm certain that any of the schools will make sure that they are forwarded to them. Please keep Allen and his family in your prayers as well as the individual who hit him. Thoughts are with you as well.

Stop Distracted Driving

I saw the child lying in the street last Sunday, shortly after the accident. The first think I did was pray for the child and his family. I then prayed for the driver. This will stay with them the rest of their life. That is how I was raised. I didn't judge or question. I let our Lord do his thing. I love all these perfect people and parents posting on what should have been done. Well, it didn't. So let's stop judging and pray for all those involved. And drivers, slow down, don't worry about getting through the yellow light and put your phone in the back seat.

He is doing very good. Still in the hospital but not in ICU. He is talking and started eating. He has a long road ahead of him , but considering everything he is a lucky little boy. God was listening to everyone's prayers.
