Last Chance: ESL Courses Start Tuesday At DCCC

Delaware County Community College is offering English as a Second Language classes starting Tuesday, May15 through July 19.

MEDIA—Classes for students wishing to learn English or improve their understanding and fluency of the English language will be offered from mid-May and continue through early August at the ’s Marple Campus (901 S. Media Line Road, Media) and at the new Upper Darby Center (Barclay Square, 1570 Garrett Rd, Upper Darby).

This 40-hour course is offered at the Marple Campus on Tuesday and Thursday
evenings from 8:05-10:05 p.m., May 15 through July 19. A later section is scheduled for the Upper Darby Center, meeting Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:30-3:30 p.m., July 9 through August 9.

English as a Second Language (ESL) provides beginning, intermediate and advanced instruction in speaking English. Students are grouped according to their current ability, which is determined through screening at the first class meeting. No testing in advance is required.

The cost of this course is $210, which includes the textbook and a CD, plus a $5 records processing fee. (Also offered at the College’s Pennocks Bridge and Downingtown campuses in Chester County.)

Pronunciation for ESL Students is designed specifically to help advanced students improve their pronunciation of Standard English. It incorporates group and pairs exercises, pronunciation games and an introduction to linguistic terms.

This 20-hour course meets on Wednesday evenings, May 30 through August 8, from 8:05-10:05 p.m. at the Marple Campus. The cost is $195, which includes the textbook, plus a $5 records processing fee. (Also offered at the Downingtown Campus in Chester County.)

Writing for Foreign Students Learning English helps those who speak English as a second language to think and write in English. Grammar is taught along with basic writing skills. A speaking knowledge of English is required. This 20-hour course meets on Thursday evenings at the Marple Campus, May 24 through July 26, from 6-8 p.m. The cost is $195, plus a $5 records processing fee.

Elementary Grammar for Foreign Students provides learning and practice in grammar skills in this high-beginning multi-skills course incorporating listening, speaking, reading and writing activities focused on everyday life. Upon successful completion of this 45-hour course, students may be eligible for three academic credits. Classes take place at the Marple Campus on Monday and Wednesday evenings, May 21 through August 8, from 8:05-10:05 p.m. There will be no class on May 28 or July 4. The cost is $350, which includes the textbook, plus a $5 records processing fee.
