Marple and Newtown Declare State of Emergency, Local Shelters Announced
Both Marple and Newtown townships have declared a state of emergency at approximately 12 p.m. Monday.
Both Marple and Newtown townships have declared a state of emergency at approximately 12 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The state of emergency is in effect immediately.
According to Marple Township Commissioners President Michael Molinaro, local shelters in Marple Newtown will include Martins Run Senior Center and Marple Newtown High School. Those seeking shelter are requested to bring sleeping and hygiene products. No evacuations have been made at this time.
Trash collection for Marple will be canceled for Tuesday.
In Newtown Township, Newtown Police Lt. Chris Lunn urged residents in an emailed alert to "shelter 'in place,'" with exception of the following emergency situations:
- Flooding of structure
- Structural damage of home
- Power lines down on structure of shelter
- Life threatening health conditions
All emergency responders will be on call 24/7 and all power outages should be called in to PECO at 1-800-841-4141. Follow these power outage tips from PECO.
911 should only be called for emergencies. Lunn states that those in Newtown Township who need shelter should call 911 for assistance. Print a list of these emergency contact numbers should you come across an emergency.

"Shelter in place"? Is this person a moron? Everyone understands to stay in place! So Newtown will use The high school? Maybe some communication skills are in order for this Lunn person. Is a college degree required for a Lt.'s Position ?

According to Marple Commissioners President Michael Molinaro, the local shelters are not pet-friendly as of now. The Delco Red Cross shelters are though. Lorraine you should go look out your window to see if something hasn't fallen on your house and head. Are you an idiot, or just flat out ignorant. What in gods name does a college degree have to do with anything going on out there today?
Unfortunately, people like you need to be told simple things like "shelter in place" or they will show up where in places not prepared for such.
