Marple Newtown Patch Asks: 1970s Candy/Card Shop?

A Newtown Square native is looking for help as he researches an old memory.

Attention longtime residents and history buffs:

Marple Newtown Patch recently received an email from a reader asking about an old candy and card shop in Newtown Square.

"I used to ride the bus down West Chester Pike in the 1970s. Right after the Newtown Square Shopping Center and before the light at Dunwoody Home, there was a candy store and card shop on the right side/south side of West Chester Pike. The building is still there. It is either a Starbucks now or the building closest to the road in the same parking lot as Starbucks. What was its name?"

Can anyone provide the name to the old candy and card shop in Newtown Township along West Chester Pike?

Mike Noonan commented on our Facebook page: "Hoffets," while Meredith Violet commented, "I thought it was Hoffman's. I loved that store and went every year at Christmas with my Mother!"

Hofferts Candies, a family owned business (at the time) with stores also in Prospect Park and Media. The store and manufacturing operation was not in the Starbucks, which was a gas station, but the adjacent building. The company went bankrupt in 1985, and the business was bought by a local couple who continued to run it for some time. I believe that it was in the building that is now "Albert's Interiors"

Hoffert's was in what's now Albert's Interiors. Starbucks was built to be a Jiffy Lube

It was Hoffert's Candies. My mother was manager for years.

I used to work for Hoffert's, before they sold to the Dutch investors. They also had a store in the Concord Mall and one in Bryn Mawr, by the train station, in addition to the Prospect Park store, (the original one), Newtown Square, (store & factory), and Media.
The StarBucks was an ARCO station at that time.
