Marple Newtown Patch wants you to get to know your first responders. They do dangerous work and Patch would like to recognize them. Meet police officer Jeffrey Johnson who is the K-9 handler of Falco with the Newtown Township Police Department.
Name: Jeffrey Johnson
Age: 45...Falco is 2 (his birthday was in January)
Hometown: Newtown Square
Rank/Title: Patrolman/K-9 Handler
How long have you been with the Newtown Police Department?
13 years this year.
What do you like about your job?
The inconsistency—nothing is the same. Every call is different for the most part. And occasionally, more than not, satisfying a customer–walking away and keeping them happy. We want a resolution to their problem. We want them to be happy/satisfied when we leave. In regards to Falco–when all the training pays off and he can peform on the job is very, very satisfying. There is much more training involved. But tapping into his brain just a little bit and getting him to do what I want him to do is just terrific.
What do you dislike about your job?
Working in foul weather—rain, snow, cold. Working the long hours—we work in 12-hour shifts. And working with a dog, make that a 13-hour shift.
What inspired you to become a police officer?
My father was a police officer in Marple Township for close to 30 years. My uncle was a police officer as well. That’s what I knew growing up—growing up in a law enforcement family. I knew immediately that I wanted to do this. I didn’t have a second thought on what I wanted to do. When I was inducted as an officer...my father was very proud of me.
What do you like about the Marple Newtown area?
I was born and raised here. If it wasn’t a great community, I wouldn’t live here or work here. There’s a lot of close-knit families in town and a good school district. I attended it and my kids attend it. I’m a homegrown kind of guy. I like what I see.
What do you want the general public to know about the Newtown Police Departmet?
We are very talented. We have individuals that specialize in their own specialty area and we can handle anything that is thrown at us.
