Police Identify Driver Killed In Newtown Square Crash

The driver who died in a fatal crash on Monday night in Newtown Square was identified as Joseph Coffey, 42, of Willistown Township, a father of five Great Valley students.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–Newtown Township Police have identified the driver who died in the crash on Goshen Road in Newtown Square Monday night as Joseph Coffey, 42, of Willistown Township.

Coffey was the father of five children in the Great Valley School District. The district on Tuesday sent a letter to parents explaining the situation and offering instructions on how to help children deal with grief.

Coffey, who was driving an SUV, was heading westbound on Goshen Road near Echo Valley and Crum Creek lanes, when he lost control of the vehicle, rolling over several times, and ejected him from the vehicle, according to police.

The crash occurred around 8:45 p.m. Coffey was announced dead at the scene. Memorial services for Coffey have not yet been announced.

Utterly heartbreaking. I am a mother of four young kids and I feel so deeply saddened for Mrs. Coffey and the young children. Wish I could help take away the pain. Our family will be praying for them during this difficult time.

our prayers go out to the Coffeys. My home is located where the accident occured. the curve there is very dangerous. Drivers tend to pick up speed as they approach that location. Not to say that Mr. Coffey was speeding. Someone said he was driving erratic. However there are so many potholes on goshen that i often swerve to avoid them and that may appear to be erratic driving. It is a blind curve and deer cross at the very spot where the accident happened and have been a contributing factor. we will never know. I do know that there have been at least 2 fatalities at that location and several other accidents.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Joe's family. Joe was a former stock broker of mine when he was with Merrill. For the time that I knew him, he was a nice, genuine person. Very easy going. Straight shooter. Very unfortunate accident. RIP old friend.
