Police To Enforce Overnight Parking Ordinance

Newtown Township Board of Supervisors approved the recommendation of the Newtown Police Department to enforce a $15 parking ticket for those in violation of the overnight parking ordinance.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–At Monday night's Newtown Township Board of Supervisors meeting, the board agreed to approve the recommendation made by the Newtown Township Police Department to step up enforcement on overnight parking in residential streets around the township.

According to supervisors Chairman Joseph Catania, the township's overnight parking ordinance does not allow parking on residential streets from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m., which applies to all residents.

"The problem is, though, that the past two to three years, the police department has been trying to give out warnings to make it subside rather than give tickets to residents," explained Catania. "The bottom line is that the warnings aren't working."

Some of the streets that the issue is of main concern include many of the narrow residential streets in the township, including Barren Road and Rockwood Road.

"The streets are narrow. When overnight parking takes place on both sides of the road, [supervisors vice chairman] Dr. [Ross] Lambert pointed out that emergency vehicles may not be able to get down those roads overnight," said Catania. "Since the warning system hasn't been working, the police department will enforce that ordinance. We really don't have much choice."

Catania said many of the narrow residential streets in the township may be able to handle parking on one side of the street but parking on both sides of the streets would make it difficult for emergency vehicles to pass through.

According to an email sent out by Lt. Chris Lunn, the police department has received an increased amount of complaints on overnight parking.

"Lately, the complaints about overnight parking violations have been getting worse. Therefore, the police department will go back to issuing parking tickets," said Lunn in the email.

Violators may receive a parking ticket of $15 and must be paid within 10 days of its issue date, according to Lunn. If a parking ticket is not paid within the 10 days, a traffic citation will be issued for the parking offense.

What do you think? Should police enforce this parking ordinance?

I have a question, what do people do when they have muptiple vehicles in the household and the driveway can only hold one or two. Also what about overnight guests.

Widen your driveway like I did, or park on the lawn!

We have a terrible parking problem in the Florida Park neighborhood. Talk about narrow streets - ours are the narrowest in the township! Start with the first block of Tuxedo Ave between West Chester Pike and Florida Ave. There's a Safelite Glass truck parked there every night! People turning into the development off of West Chester Pike onto Tuxedo Ave.have no room to get by if another car is coming the opposite way!

Lived in Newtown Heights for thirty years. In the last year noticed cars parking in streets overnight. The street are not wide enough for parking and two way traffic. I believe it is a safety issue and the police should issue tickets and cure the situation.

2-6am is the least-traveled time on roads in Newtown Heights. If anything, cars shouldn't be allowed to park there during rush hour when everyone cuts through on Ellis Avenue to avoid going to the light at Bishop Hollow. Someone hit my mom's parked car on Ellis during rush hour. Or talk to the Little League about how many cars are using Ellis as their parking lot - all the way past Locust. Don't fault people parking overnight 2-6am when there is absolutely no traffic!

I agree. Parking overnight is an issue.

I am not going to take sides here, but I will say that there should be signs posted (like many townships) for these new parking restrictions before fines are implemented. I don't think this is asking too much. Without proper notice (like a mailing) and signs posted - anyone could be ticked without understanding what they have done wrong. This is a somewhat significant change and proper communication is key for an issue like this.
