Restaurant Review: Country Squire Diner

What could be more comforting than diner food and freshly baked goods? has been around for decades and my extended family fondly recalls memories of high school evenings spent gossiping over fries, burgers and dozens of breakfasts. I met up with my foursome for Sunday brunch and we were able to tackle a good chunk of the breakfast menu (the entire menu is available all day long).

I was running late and my guests went ahead and ordered the Buffalo chicken bites. Instead of fried chicken bites bathed in hot sauce, this item featured huge chunks of white breast meat tossed in wing sauce. The meat was slightly overcooked but the Buffalo sauce was spicy and tangy (most places make wing sauce by mixing Frank’s hot sauce and butter). This plate of savory morsels disappeared in minutes.

We shared the sausage omelet (with turkey sausage), French toast with turkey sausage, breakfast wrap and crepes with scrambled eggs and pork sausage. The sausage omelet with homefries and toast was decent. The portion was generous and the eggs cooked nicely. The turkey sausage was a bit rubbery but full of turkey and sage flavors. The homefries were excellent. Strangely though, the homefries differed dramatically from plate to plate. The homefries that came with the omelet were quite crisp and golden brown. The homefries that accompanied the breakfast wrap had almost no color and were quite tender. I assume that how your homefries come out depends on where they were on the griddle.

The French toast was fairly good—not overly sweet and cooked with golden edges. The pieces of toast married well with syrup. The same chewy turkey sausage made an appearance here and my dining companion wished she had ordered pork sausage instead.

The whole wheat breakfast wrap was brimming with scrambled eggs, bacon and cheese. I was impressed with the healthy alternative to a bleached flour wrap and my companion informed me that a spinach wrap was also available. The eggs were soft but fully cooked and the bacon was good. The cheese was nicely melted (but tasted processed) and added a nice creaminess to the breakfast wrap. The fork-tender homefries needed just a touch of ketchup but I preferred the crisp homefries.

The crepes with scrambled eggs and sausage coins was not my favorite. The crepes themselves were almost as thick as pancakes and extremely rubbery. The eggs inside were a bit overcooked and the sausage satisfactory. 

The service was casual. As it was quite a busy Sunday we didn’t have too much contact with our server as she was running around constantly. The prices are fair and the menu is one of the most extensive I have ever seen. I think the wallet-friendly offerings and we-never-close mentality of the Country Squire Diner are what have kept this diner in business for so long and will continue to into the future.
