Visions For Vacancies: Mattress Giant in Newtown
What would you like to see at the former mattress store on West Chester Pike in Newtown Square?
Mattress Giant in Newtown Square has recently shuttered its doors to the public. The large space is located, among a strip of shops, on 3721 West Chester Pike in Newtown Square. The mattress store has served the Marple Newtown community throughout the years with their selection of mattresses, pillows, bed frames and furniture.
The store had sold brands like Tempur-Pedic, Stearns & Foster, Kingsdown, Sealy, Simmons, DreamFit and Natura. Mattress Giant offered delivery and 50 percent off certain brands.
Marple Newtown Patch wants to know what you would like to see at this former Mattress Giant site.

That whole strip of stores looks run down. Any business that moves in will be at a disadvantage due to the tired antiquated look of the building. I wish the landlord would consider an update - and I don't mean a coat of paint that was left over in the basement. It just reflects poorly on Newtown Square.

The landlord is obviously a slumlord that does not care about the appearance of the buildings within the community and is solely focused on grabbing the money and running. Most likely some large conglomerate not even in the area that can care less.

This strip of stores is not the only place that looks horrible. How about the old videon lot next door. Newtown square is starting to look runner down in other spots.. what we DON'T need is another bank...

Ironically Claude Debottom owns the strip of stores everyone is talking about. He is also the developer fighting the BPG project , so he is to blame both eye sores.

19073 resident- you are absolutely correct. The properties along that strip are owned by Newtown Square East c/o National Realty Corp.- none other than Claude DeBotton who acquired them from Videon in 2007.

In lieu of the old-fashioned five & dime, perhaps a bigger and better (than the one that vacated several years ago) $1.00 store might work? Suzy Q

I'd like to see the whole strip plaza torn down and replaced with something useful. (Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Seasons 52 restaurant, etc.)
