What to do With Kids in Winter

Colder weather means fewer options to entertain your children.

A trip to the playground or park can be less appealing when the temperature dips.

There are plenty of things you can do inside your home, but sometimes you get cabin fever and want to get out with your children to some place you can stay warm.

Whether you want to go shopping or not, malls can be a nice place to stretch your legs and stay warm, whether you’re going to King of Prussia, Springfield, Granite Run, Plymouth Meeting, Exton Square or another mall.

Some larger stores, such as Ikea are also entertaining and large. We took my son before Christmas and he loved walking around the place. We even stayed for dinner at their kid-friendly restaurant.

There are also some children’s gyms that have activities, such as Gymboree in Ardmore, My Gym in Springfield and the Little Treehouse in Chestnut Hill. I haven’t been to those, but I’d love to hear from parents who have. Are these gyms something not to be missed? Are there others that I’m missing.

Local libraries always have programs for kids and families. Here are some links for local library systems:

Philadelphia also has some great kid-friendly museums, such as the Please Touch Museum, the Franklin Institute and the Academy of Natural Sciences. Adventure Aquarium is also just across the river in Camden.

What are some other places you’ve found to take your kids during the colder months?

Skatieum in Havertown or U. Penn's Ice Rink
International sport, skating and fun center in Cherry Hill, NJ
Picnic on a mild day in Ridley Creek park with hot cocoa as the main focus.
Walk Gay Street in West Chester
Theater for kids - Media, Ambler and in the city
MilkBoy for concerts for kids on Sat mornings
Rec programs that are inexpensive for a few Saturdays for ages 3 and up.
Walk the town of Wayne all bundled up!
Wall the neighborhood looking for signs of spring, or the next holiday (decoration for Valentine's or St. Party's, this is why I decorate for all of the holidays)
Have a coloring party for a few kids and their parents- an hour and a 1/2 is good.
Have a cooking decorating get together.
Drive out to Lancaster or the Jersey Shore for lunch to change the scenery.

Smith playhouse in fair mount park. For kids under 5. Free (with suggested donation) http://smithkidsplayplace.org/

I take have been taking my 13 month old since she was 10 months - of course it's more fun for 2-4 year olds - she loves watching big kids play - so it's great for getting out of the house during cold weather.
