BROOMALL–Loomis Elementary School their their 5th annual pajama drive for the Pajama Program, which delivers warm sleepwear and nurturing books to children in need. The school collected 321 pairs of pajamas, 440 books, and $1,050 to donate to Hurricane Sandy victims along with numerous items. In addition, Barnes & Noble donated many books, Mel's Pharmacy donated $100 and Joe’s Pizza teamed up with the school for their pajama party kick-off party.   The children and staff wore their favorite pajamas to school and all the newly donated pajamas and books were on display in the cafeteria.
BROOMALL–With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season it’s easy to forget that less than two months ago parts of our region were devastated by “Superstorm Sandy.”  But as Broomall resident and Devon Prep sophomore Michael Knudson learned recently, “It’s not even close to being over.” Knudson drove two hours on a recent Saturday morning to volunteer in Sea Bright, NJ, the southern half of a barrier beach which is the Sandy Hook Peninsula.  The small town in Monmouth County is a little more than an hour from New York City. BROOMALL–Though some may have moved and recovered quickly from Hurricane Sandy, others are still living in the aftermath of Sandy's wrath. And Worrall Elementary School has not forgotton.  On Nov. 30, Worrall School Librarian Gerardine Palmer set up collection bins at the main office to send relief supplies and donations to the Gerritsen Beach Volunteer Fire Department in Queens, New York. Palmer's daughter, Megan, also volunteered to deliver the donated items. BROOMALL–A Marple resident on the 2900 block of Dogwood Lane addressed the Marple Township Board of Commissioners at Tuesday night's meeting in regards to the number of days the power had been out on her entire block. According to the homeowner, the power was out for five days during Sandy but about 16 homes on the 2900 block of Dogwood Lane has seen spurts of power outages at five-days at a time as well as random, miscellaneous one- or two-day power outages. As Hurricane Sandy made its way towards the Delaware Valley and east coast, the State Animal Response Teams (CARTs) located in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties prepared to assist local residents and their pets. BROOMALL–From the arrival to the end of Sandy's rampage in Newtown Township, the Newtown Township Police Department received a total of 135 emergency calls for service during the storm. As residents across the Delaware Valley resume their daily lives and pick up the pieces post Hurricane Sandy, Marple and Newtown townships will also resume their normal leaf collection schedules on Monday. Though Marple township did send out limited trash collection crews last Monday and Tuesday during the storm in order to prevent potential storm sewer blockages, the normal leaf collection schedule will resume on Monday.   Leaf collection will be picked up this week for residents living in wards 5, 6, and 7 in Marple Township.  In addition, Marple Township will be collecting debris–post …

Hurricane Sandy caused wide-spread damage along the East Coast and locally, causing power interruptions to more than 850,000 customers, or roughly 1 out of every 2 PECO customers—making Sandy the most damaging storm in company history, according to PECO's website. PECO workers–with a crew of about 3,500 out on the scene–had restored service to more than 625,000 customers by Thursday morning. NEWTOWN SQUARE–The clean-up and repairs had already begun Tuesday afternoon at a home on the 4100 block of Meadow Lane in Newtown Township after a very large tree, uprooted and fell on top of the home Monday night during Hurricane Sandy's highest winds. Homeowner Marie Toglia was wrapped in a blanket watching workers cut up the large tree and wrapping her home in tarp so the continued rain from Sandy would stop flowing into her second floor. BROOMALL–Thousands were without power across the state, including thousands in the Marple Newtown area, according to PECO. The Broomall McDonald's on West Chester Pike and Sproul Road also faced their own power outage during Hurricane Sandy. Patch caught up with the Broomall McDonald's crew Tuesday afternoon as they were throwing out spoiled food from their refrigerators and freezers. According to restaurant manager Jerry Harvey, the restaurant is expected to have a new shipment in by 8 a.m. Wednesday. The restaurant will reopen soon after it has been resupplied, said Harvey.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, a number of fallen trees and wires have been noted around Marple Newtown. The following information has been provided by Marple and Newtown township officials and PennDOT. The American Red Cross worked with local and county governments to set up 14 shelters in the suburbs and the city of Philadelphia.
