Bishop Joseph P. McFadden, the first president of Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield, has died at age 65. McFadden was currently serving as a Tenth Bishop of Harrisburg. The Philadelphia native was a graduate of St. Joseph’s University and Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood.  McFadden was named President of Cardinal O’Hara by Cardinal Bevilacqua in 1993. “During his tenure as President, the school’s enrollment increased from 1,540 students to 2,000 students and he helped to initiate the innovative computer 'Laptops for Learning' program in the school,” according to McFadden’…
WEST CHESTER—Kenneth Fuller, who is a former Marple Newtown High School swimmer, is going to jail. The former Bayard Rustin swim coach who pleaded guilty in January to having sex with a 17-year-old member of his team will serve a 7-to 23-month sentence after a judge rejected his appeal to remain free, the Daily Local News is reporting. Tredyffrin Township police recently announced an arrest, and a confession, in the Jan. 20 robbery from a Girl Scout cookie sale at the Berwyn Pathmark. Jevon Michael Avis, 31, of Carlisle, and formerly of the 300 block of Beechwood Avenue in Berwyn, was arrested Tuesday evening. He admitted stealing from the scouts in an interview with a police detective, police say. PHILADELPHIA–Lower Merion police officer and Delaware County Community College graduate Sean Quinn was found dead Monday morning in South Philadelphia as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to LMPD Superintendent Michael McGrath. Earlier Monday, Lower Merion police had alerted other regional law enforcement authorities to Quinn's disappearance, giving a description of him. Quinn, a Delaware County resident, was a D.A.R.E. officer and was once honored at a Philadelphia 76ers game as a "Hometown Hero". Media–A local Chinese New Year celeration took place in Media on Saturday. This year's celebration was for the "Year of the Snake" with Philadelphia's premiere Lion Dancers Hung Gar Kung Fu Academy. BERWYN–Tredyffrin-Easttown Patch is reporting that a Berwyn couple were attacked in their home Thursday night, Jan. 31. The home invasion then led to a jewelry store robbery: Information received by police was that a local resident, who had returned from work at approximately 7 PM, was accosted by three or four black male (masked) subjects armed with handguns who forced themselves into his home. Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan announced Monday the arrests of two men in separate domestic assault cases. Ernest Manerchia, 57, of West Chester, is a police officer in the City of Chester, Delaware County, and a member of the SWAT team. Walmart may see some steep competition. Over the holiday season, Target implemented a guarantee to match the prices of its online competitors. According to Daily Finance, the retailer has decided to extend the popular program year-round: Under the new policy, customers will get a price-match if they can provide proof of a lower price at Amazon.com, Walmart.com, ToysRUs.com, BabiesRUs.com or BestBuy.com. MEDIA–The spotlight was on Linvilla Orchards last Wednesday afternoon as a production crew filmed for a new Travel Channel show called Cross Country Christmas. As part of the restructuring of Citigroup, which includes cutting 11,000 jobs, a number of local branches will be closing, according to Philly.com. According to Philly.com, branches closing are: Chestnut Hill Berwyn Media Villanova Springfield (Delaware County) The Bala Cynwyd branch will stay open, according to Philly.com.Citigroup announced the layoffs on Dec. 5 as part of a restructuring move designed to save $1.1 billion in expenses in 2014.
NEWTOWN SQUARE–Double Edge Sports Grille, located at the former Winner's Circle in Marville Shopping Center in Edgmont Township, is open for business. The new restaurant opened the Wednesday before Thanksgiving but will host its grand opening celebration on Jan. 12. Owner and Manager Chris Knight says they wanted to wait until after the holidays to truly celebrate the opening. WEST CHESTER–In case you missed it: At the Nov. 29 meeting of the Chester County Commissioners, representatives of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster were told that they could not erect a holiday display outside the county courthouse. Thornbury resident Tracy McPherson spoke on behalf of what she estimated to be about 100 local "Pastafarians" who wished to erect a display on county property alongside the menorah and nativity scene already there. RADNOR–Ashley Ryan Hareford, 20, of Grottoes, Virginia, will be charged with multiple felonies including Involuntary Deviant Sexual Intercourse, Statutory Sexual Assault, Indecent Assault, Criminal Use of a Communication Facility, Aggravated Indecent Assault, Indecent Exposure and Corrupting the Morals of a Minor, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan announced Monday. WYNNEWOOD–While the two winning tickets for last night's $580 million Powerball jackpot were sold in Arizona and Missouri, there's still another big winner afoot in Wynnewood. A Powerball ticket worth $1 million was sold at the Lancaster Avenue Sunoco at Wynnewood, according to a PA Lottery press release. The gas station is located at 330 E Lancaster Ave., across from the Whole Foods parking lot. The winning ticket was one of only three $1 million winners in Pennsylvania, according to the PA Lottery's website. To win the million, each player had to match five of five numbers. Another 28 …
A tire came off a truck Monday morning on the Schuylkill Expressway in South Philadelphia, damaging a building's roof, NBC 10 reported. According to PennDOT, the tire struck another expressway vehicle about 9:50 a.m., then bounced and came through the roof of a Philadelphia Housing Authority building on the 1900 block of Vare Avenue. NBC reported no one in the building was hurt, and a woman in the car that was hit was hospitalized but not believed to be seriously hurt.
GLADWYNE–A Gladwyne mansion that once hosted MTV's 'Teen Cribs' is on the market for a drastically reduced asking price, Curbed Philly reported this week. The Pouls family are asking $3.8 million for 1211 Mirabeau Lane, a 6-bedroom, 10-bathroom home on 1.9 acres, according to AOL Real Estate. Curbed Philly reports the asking price was once $17 million, $5 million less than what the house was built for in 1998. Most recently, the owners had sought $6.9 million, according to the report. NEWTOWN SQUARE–Azie Southeast has opened its doors in Edgmont Square Shopping Center in Newtown Square. The former Sang Kee Noodle Bowl has been revamped and the menu updated following the closing of Sang Kee in late August. The new menu offers small plates, Azie hoagies and, of course, Azie's signature fried rice. PHILADELPHIA–They came, they saw, they crashed into the Delaware River. In machines powered only by the creators' strength, ingenuity and fearlessness, 33 teams competed Saturday for Red Bull Flugtag glory at the Camden waterfront. The teams each flew their contraptions off of a 30-foot-high dock in an attempt to glide far and impress the judges with their panache. "Flugtag" is German for "flying day," and in the 20 years since the first one was held in Vienna, Red Bull has sponsored 80 Flugtags worldwide. Saturday's event attracted thousands of spectators.
