The Marple-Newtown Fourth of July Parade Committee, Marple Township Commissioners and Broomall Rotary Club announced the third annual Firecracker 5K race, which will be run in conjunction with the July 4th Parade.
“The event was a great success last year with over 400 runners. The parade spectators got a thrill out of seeing all the men, women and children running up & down West Chester Pike. We hope to top that with more runners and more prizes. Most importantly, we are having fun while we raise funds for the Broomall Rotary's charitable service projects” says race director and Broomall Rotarian John McCoy.
The race will begin at 9:25 a.m. near the Broomall Fire Station and will run in the west bound lanes of West Chester Pike along the parade route. Just past Bryn Mawr Avenue in Newtown Square, the runners will make a U-turn and return to the Broomall Fire Station. An awards ceremony and the raffle drawings will follow.
A 5 kilometer race is 3.1 miles in distance. Fast runners will complete the course in about 15 minutes and everyone will complete the run before the parade. The race is open to everyone who can complete the course in less than one hour. Registration is online at www.Firecracker5KRun.com.

More About Broomall Fire Company
The Broomall Fire Company here has been providing fire safety services to the residents of Marple Township since 1923.
The fire company currently holds 11 apparatuses, from rescue and engine trucks to utility and command trucks.
It holds an annual Fire Prevention Week to educate the community and its children through various programs and activities for fire safety awareness.
Most recently, the department received approximately 710 emergency calls for 2010. All emergency calls should be dialed as 911.
