Child Safety Locks Deemed Unsafe

The Safety 1st toilet and cabinet locks were sold at Bed, Bath and Beyond, Burlington Coat Factory, Home Depot, Target and Walmart.

Hundreds of thousands of child safety locks are being recalled because they can fail, exposing children to dangerous situations. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with Dorel Juvenile Group, Thursday announced a voluntary recall of about 183,000 toilet locks and 685,000 cabinet locks. Young children can unexpectedly disengage the toilet locks and gain access to water in the toilet, posing the risk of drowning, according to the CPSC, and the cabinet locks are being recalled because young children can disengage the lock, posing the risk of injury from dangerous or unsafe items stored in the cabinet. Have you had issues with these locks or others not working? Tell us in the comments below. Consumers …

NEWTOWN SQUARE–Marco Tarrantino, co-owner of The Newtown Grill, addressed the public at Monday night's Board of Supervisors meeting that a demolition permit has been filed for the historic barn behind the restaurant after receiving complaints from the neighbors and a citation from the township. According to Township Manager Mike Trio, The Newtown Grill was cited for nuisance of maintaining the historic barn and the feral cats that the neighbors have seen inhabiting the property. A handful of neighbors from Terrazaa were present at the meeting to address their concerns about the dilapidated barn and the cats roaming their properties. Steve Schoenstatt, of Cornerstone Drive, addressed the supervisors of some of the issues over the old barn …

How about trapping and removing the mainline wanna be residents of Terrazzo. I think the barn has way more aesthetic appeal than their fake Italian condo complex.   more ›

Special Needs Registry To Enhance Response Times

Delaware County will implement a new system that will enhance response times during emergencies in assisting those with special needs.

BROOMALL–Marple Township Manager Anthony Hamaday announced at last week's Board of Commissioners work session meeting that Delaware County will be implementing a special needs registry. "We're urging anybody who has the need or a special needs individual who needs special assistance to contact us so we can give that information to the county," said Hamaday. According to Hamaday, the system will help the county as well as local police, fire and emergency personnel to quickly respond to those individuals during an emergency. Though the township used to have a special needs registry previously, the database was not kept up-to-date, according to Hamaday. "At one time we did have a special needs database that was being maintained by Nick Kerber…

Delaware County’s Animal Protection Board negotiates with the Chester County SPCA to extend its stray animal agreement, according to the Delaware County Daily Times.

MEDIA–Delaware County is currently in negotiations to extend an agreement with the Chester County SPCA to accept stray animals after its June 30 deadline, according to the Delaware County Daily Times.  Since Jan. 1, the Chester County SPCA has been accepting strays on behalf of Delaware County municipalities, at a cost of $250 per animal since the Delaware County SPCA has become a lifesaving shelter and no longer accepts stray animals. A Chesco SPCA extension is likely, Animal Control Board Chairman Tom Judge Jr. told the Delaware County Daily Times. The agreement with the Chester County SPCA was a temporary fix while a new county-run animal shelter could be built in Darby Township but financial concerns have slowed the project. The new …

Take Our Poll: 70 mph Speed Limit on Turnpike?

State lawmakers might raise the Pennsylvania Turnpike speed limit to 70 miles per hour. Do you support the move?

State lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow the Turnpike Commission to raise the Pennsylvania Turnpike speed limit to 70 miles per hour. The House Transportation Committee recently approved the measure, which would affect sections of both the Northeast Extension and the rest of the turnpike. Supporters of the measure say the change makes sense because vehicles are safer and the turnpike is wider, flatter and straighter thanks to road improvements. There is no timetable for when - or if  - the bill will come to a vote. Turnpike officials say the speed limit change would not be made without additional study and would apply only to some portions of the road. Do you think the speed limit should be raised? Vote in our poll and add …

DCCC Seeks Waiver Request To Build Pole Barn

The community college is hoping to seek a waiver request to build a 30x60 feet pole barn on its Marple campus.

BROOMALL–Delaware County Community College is seeking a land development waiver request from Marple Township to build a storage shelter on the college's Marple campus behind the tennis courts. "This is an association with the construction of a pole barn they need for storage of materials," explained Township Manager Anthony Hamaday. The proposed barn is expected to be approximately 30x60-feet. According to Hamaday, the college has a policy in which they are not allowed to throw away any equipment. The college must either sell it or store it, in which case they are hoping to store it in the pole barn. Because the pole barn is considered a non-residential structure, the college is seeking a land development waiver request from the planning …

Obama Endorses Same-Sex Marriage: PA Advocates Rejoice

President Obama made his historic pronouncement during an interview with ABC News.

President Barack Obama has publicly come out in support of gay marriage, the first time in history that a sitting U.S. President has ever done so.  Obama, who during the last presidential election stated that he opposed gay marriage, gave the news to ABC News' Robin Roberts in an interview that will air on ABC's “Good Morning America" on Thursday. "I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, …

State Senate Adds $500M to Corbett's Budget

Lawmakers discuss vote.

HARRISBURG–Restoring $500 million to the proposed state budget, the Pennsylvania State Senate approved a $27.6 billion state budget in a 39-8 vote Wednesday. The Republican-penned bill restored funding to basic and higher education, human services programs, hospitals, nursing homes and services for individuals with disabilities—winning the approval of many Democrats, as well. In news releases from Democrats and Republicans alike, lawmakers called the vote a positive first step in the budget process and an attempt to provide Pennsylvanians services that they felt Gov. Tom Corbett's budget initially shortchanged. "Senate Bill 1466 will provide substantial restorations to certain areas of the Governor's proposed budget that reflect the fiscal…
