How to Be Safe On the Beach

Have fun this summer with these safety tips.

Beach Safety

Summertime is upon us. The kids are getting out of school and many families have vacation plans down the shore.  Safety never takes a break; please remember that when we are on the beach we are aware of our surroundings.

Only swim in the flagged areas where trained life guards can see you. Parents with smaller children: keep your hands on your child when wading in the surf. Older children should only go as far out as the lifeguards allow. Watch for rip currents. If you are caught in the rip current, swim along the shoreline until the current releases you and then swim towards the beach.

When playing on the beach, do not climb into the deep holes that are dug; collapsing wet sand is a recipe for disaster. When playing ball and other fun beach games, be mindful of the other people around you. Try to play games behind the crowds of people sunbathing.

If you get separated from your families, have a designated meeting place on the beach–lifeguard stand, trashcans, or the entrance to the beach. Follow the rules of the beach and always follow the directions of the lifeguards.
