Know Two Ways Out

Does your family have an escape plan?
If there was a fire in your home, does your family know how to get out? Do you sleep with your bedroom door and your children’s bedroom door closed? I hope you have answered "yes" to these questions.

If there is a fire in your home, your first way out of any room is the door, however if the door is closed feel it first with the back of your hand. If it is hot…DON’T open it, the fire is on the other side.
Your second way out is a window. If you have a two or three story home, you should purchase an escape ladder from a local retail store. If you cannot exit the window, open it any way possible and stay near the window and yell for help. The firefighters will come get you. If you are able to exit your home, make sure your family has a meeting place. A meeting place can be your favorite tree, a curbside mailbox, or your neighbor’s front door.

Once you are out of the house, stay out! If someone from your family is missing and has not made it to the meeting place, tell the first arriving emergency responder and we will go get that family member out.
