Gen. Smedley D. Butler Marines at St. Pius X School

The Americanism History team of the General Smedley D. Butler Detachment of the Marine Corps League regularly makes Americanism and Flag History presentations in local elementary schools, YMCAs, and Senior Centers.  On November 13, 2013, Marine Corps Leaguers Jim Mulhern and Earle Drake made a presentation at the St. Pius X School in Broomall.  The program includes the evolution of the American Flag, the history of the siege at Fort McHenry in Baltimore harbor, the history of Flag Day and history of the Pledge of Allegiance.  The program also included the playing of several bugle calls using the electronic bugle. Usually they are played live by the Detachment’s Ceremonial Bugler but due to a conflict in scheduling the Marines improvised and used their electronic bugle.

At the end of the program the students were presented a small flag pin and a Flag Brochure. Then the Marine Corps Leaguers and the students recited the Pledge of Allegiance together. The St. Pius X School was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for its participation in the program.
