Broomall Carnival, Take Back Drugs, Pinewood Derby Among Weekend Events [Get Out]

It's a busy week and weekend in and around Marple Newtown Patch. See what's going on.

There are lots of things happening this weekend. It's a weekend full of community events. Safely dispose of your unwanted prescription drugs and help to raise funds to the Riddle Cancer Center. Also have fun while supporting your local fire companies at the Broomall Fire Co. Carnival and Newtown Square Fire Co. Flea Market.

Broomall Fire Company Spring Carnival

  • When: Friday, April 26, from 6 to 11 p.m., Saturday, April 27, from 3 to 11 p.m. and Sunday, April 28, from 1 to 6 p.m.
  • Where: Broomall Fire Company, 10 N Malin Rd in Broomall
  • Why Go: Enjoy games, rides and food while supporting the Broomall Fire Company at the town's biggest family-friendly event of the year.
  • Cost: 56 tickets for $50

Delaware County Take Back Unused Drugs

  • When: Saturday, April 27 fom 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Where: 11 locations throughout Delaware County, including Giant Food Store in Broomall, Media Police Dept. and State Police-Media Barracks (see attached PDF for more locations.)
  • Why Go: Get rid of unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Clean out your medicine cabinets and safely dispose of prescription drugs.
  • Cost: Free

Marple Newtown High School's Cabaret Night

  • When: Friday, April 26, at 7 p.m.
  •  Where: Marple Newtown Senior High School, 120 Media Line Rd in Newtown Square
  • Why Go: The MNHS Choir Parents Association will host the 3rd annual "Cabaret Night" with an evening of Italian food and more than 20 musicians singing show tunes, jazz, pop and more.
  • Cost: $15

Thomas Massey House Opening Day

  • When: Sunday, April 28, from noon to 4 p.m.
  • Where: Thomas Massey House, 473 Lawrence Rd in Broomall
  • Why Go: Learn about open hearth cooking and blacksmithing at the opening of the 2013 tour season. Visit the display and discussion on Colonial money and take a tour of this historic home.

Newtown Square Fire Co. Auxiliary Flea Market

  • When: Sunday, April 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Where: Newtown Square Shopping Center, 3590 West Chester Pike in Newtown Square
  • Why Go: Enjoy a day of treasure hunting and find bargains on books, tools, clothes, a variety of collectibles. There is something for everyone.
  • Cost: Varies

Constellation District Pinewood Derby

  • When: Saturday, April 27, at 9 a.m.
  • Where: Church of Jesus Christ of the Later-Day Saints, 721 Paxon Hollow Road in Broomall
  • Why Go: The cars have been built and it's time to put them to the test. After the qualifying heats, the winner will be determined by a final race series on a racetrack more than 32 feet long. Awards will be given to the top three finishers along with awards for participation, the Best Cub Scout Drivers Costume, Conquers ‘d’ Elegance, Best of Derby, and Most Detailed Car. Good luck racers!

Riddle Cancer Center Fundraiser

  • When: Saturday, April 27, at 7 p.m.
  • Where: Media Theatre, 104 E. State St, Media
  • Why Go: Help to raise funds for the Cancer Center while enjoying Media Theatre's Mame. All profits go to help the patients.
  • Cost: $50

 Laxapaloosa

  • When: Saturday, April 27, all day
  • Where: Penncrest High School, 134 Barren Rd in Media
  • Why Go: The Sixth Annual Penncrest-Optimist Laxapaloosa serves as a fundraiser for the NK Smiles Scholarship Fund, named in honor and memory of the late Norm Kelly, Jr. The day will feature youth, high school, and Penncrest Alumni lacrosse games, along with live music, food and games for the whole family.

Media Firehouse Tour

  • When: Tuesday, April 30, at noon
  • Where: Media-Upper Providence Free Library, 1 E. Front St, Media
  • Why Go: Celebrate the 2013 PA One Book: Every Young Child selection, The Bus for Us by Suzanne Bloom, with a tour of the firehouse. Learn about firefighting and take a tour of the fire trucks.
  • Cost: Free
