Honor Flight Wants to Honor Delco WWII Vets

Honor Flight Philadelphia, based in Delaware County, is on a mission to thank WWII with a special, free trip to D.C..

Honor Flight Philadelphia, the local affiliate of the national volunteer organization dedicated to taking World War II Veterans to see the WWII Monument and other Washington, D.C. monuments dedicated to veterans, is looking for veterans for their next trip.

The group is taking WWII veterans to Washington on June 15.

Honor Flight Philadelphia President Andy Schiavello, who lives in Springfield, tells Patch "transportation, breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as a Heroes Welcome and USO show will be provided at NO COST to the veterans. We are also seeking guardians (escorts) to accompany our heroes on the trip. For more information, please visit www.honorflightphiladelphia.org or call Cathy at 610-613-3865."

Because of the proximity to Washington, Honor Flight Philadelphia trips are taken by chartered bus rather than by air.

Schiavello says several veterans who had planned to go on the June trip can no longer travel on that day and so there is space for about 15 or more veterans.

Many WWII veterans and their families attended a Delaware Valley premiere for the Honor Flight documentary film last month at the Regal Cinemas in Edgmont. The movie chronicles the efforts in communities around the country to fly veterans to Washington to pay tribute to the people the movie says literally "saved the world" during World War II.
