PHMS Band to March Monday in 53rd Veteran's Day Parade

Paxon Hollow Middle School will be among the many area local middle school and high school bands to march in the annual Veteran's Day parade in Media.

MEDIA–Media's 53nd Annual Veterans Day Parade, which is the largest Veterans Day parade in the state, will be held on Monday, Nov. 12, at 11:11 a.m.

Media Mayor Bob McMahon said this year's honors will focus on the new, greatest generation of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan.

McMahon said U.S. General David Petraeus recently referred to this generation of veterans as the new, greatest generation in an educational program film and it was decided that would be the theme of this year's parade.

The parade will kick off with the roar of motorcycles down State Street. Then the thousands of parade-goers will enjoy 10 high school marching bands, fire trucks and first responders and of course veterans.

Guest speakers and special parade guests include, Sen. Bob Casey Jr. (D), Congressman Bob Brady (D) and U.S. Rep. Pat Meehan (R-Dist. 7) and Col. Wilbur Wolf with the Pennsylvania National Guard.

McMahon said Casey is expected to speak on the new, greatest generation and the commitment that our newest veterans have given to the country.

Along with the high school marching bands, 400 junior ROTC from 10 different schools will march in the parade, including Chester High School's Marine Corp. ROTC.

The passing of the flag will also take place in front of the County Courthouse.

A large crowd attended last year's Veterans Day Parade when Vice President Joe Biden spoke but McMahon said this year the weather is expected to be much nicer. Temperatures were unusually low during the 2011 parade.

McMahon said he expects 8,000 to 10,000 people to come out for the parade Monday and another million and a half will watch the local television news station's coverage throughout the day.

The parade route will begin at State Street and Edgmont Avenue and march down State to Orange Street and then turn onto Front Street. The guest speakers and a ceremony will follow the parade in front of the County Courthouse.

There will be no parking along Veteran's Square, Front, State and parts of Orange streets, beginning Monday morning.

The following schools and/or marching bands will march in the parade:

  • Penncrest High School
  • Springton Lake Middle School
  • Paxon Hollow Middle School
  • Strathhaven High School
  • Beverly Hills Middle School
  • Drexel Hill Middle School
  • Interboro High School
  • Garnet Valley High School
  • Delcroft
  • St. Aloysius School
  • Ridley High School
  • Chester High School ROTC
  • Penn Delco ROTC

The parade is organized by the Veterans Legacy Project and the Veterans National Education Project.
