Sarah Murnaghan to be Released from Hospital

The now 11-year old Newtown Square girl who has Cystic Fibrosis and who's parents fought to have her placed on the adult transplant list at age 10, is expected to return home after being in the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for months. 

Sarah Murnaghan received two separate lung transplant surgeries. The first on June 12, which failed within hours, and the lungs were removed and Sarah was placed on a bypass machine before a second set of lungs became available on June 15 and she underwent a second transplant surgery.

Sarah entered the hospital on Feb. 19 and is expected to be released on Tuesday.

In recent week's Sarah was taken off oxygen, with support from a machine that assists her in breathing, and has begun to walk with the help of a walker, according to the Delaware County Daily Times. 

Throughout the summer, Sarah has shown continued improvements with some challenges along the way. Her mother, Janet Murnaghan has kept the public updated on Sarah's progress through her Facebook page. Here are just a few of those entries. 

On Aug. 26: WE ARE GOING HOME TOMORROW!!!!!!

On Aug 22: Everything us going well with Sarah's physical therapy. No concerns or problems. We are hoping she will be home soon.

On Aug. 15: Unfortunately, Sarah is having a hard day, because she is in some pain from yesterday's surgery. On a positive note, though, they took lung biopsies during surgery yesterday ... NO REJECTION!!! 
WOOOOHOOOO!!! Thank GOD!!!!

On Aug. 7: Sarah celebrated her 11th birthday with her family.

On Aug. 6: Sarah walked 10 feet with her walker for the first time, actually made it out the room!!!!!!

On July 26: Sarah is talking!

On July 21: Sarah stood today in physical therapy, after months in bed and lots of time paralyzed and sedated this was a huge accomplishment.

On July 8: Sarah has developed pneumonia in her right lung. ...Yesterday was tough. Today she is more stable, but this is definitely a large set back.

On June 28: All her chest tubes are out!!! Yay!

On June 22: Awake and nodding yes and no to questions. She is still intubated and frustrated that she can't talk.

Sarah had been on both the adult and pediatric lung transplant list for months however because of her age and organ transplant policy, she could only receive adult donor lungs after all adult candidates, regardless of how sick they are, had the opportunity to accept them. Sarah received her donor lungs after a federal judge ruled that Sarah could be temporarily added to the adult list, regardless of her age, for a lung transplant following a lawsuit her parents filed.
