With the release of the exquisite song cycle, Sunrise on Avenue C, Maddock has re-established himself as one of the most respected singer/songwriters on the scene. Back in 1999, James Maddock — then the lead singer of the band Wood — looked like he was on the verge of worldwide fame. The group's debut album, Songs From Stamford Hill, was showcased on popular TV dramas such as Dawson's Creek, while Wood was touring with the likes of Paula Cole and Train. But the band never released a sophomore album, and broke up.
Maddock moved to New York, regrouped and, late last year, released his first solo album, “Sunrise On Avenue C,” on the Jersey-based indie label, Ascend. Maddock has created a heartbreakingly lovely debut solo album. His timeless songwriting style, which seems to draw from great songwriters of every era, conveys quiet confidence and lovely intimacy. “Sunrise On Avenue C” is very much in the vein of “Songs From Stamford Hill” — a batch of unpretentious, tastefully arranged roots-rock songs, sung in an appealingly raspy croon. Most of the lyrics seem autobiographical, though there is a philosophical bent to “Straight Lines,” and “Dumbed Down” is a protest song of sorts, genially poking fun at reality TV.
