Think Spring With Birds and Flowers, Check Out a Movie, Celebrate the Presidents

Check out these picks for things to do this Presidents' Day weekend in the greater Marple Newtown Patch area.

It’s Thursday, so it’s time to think about the weekend plans. Thanks to our nation’s founding fathers, schools and many workplaces are closed on Monday for Presidents Day. There’s plenty to do over this long holiday weekend, from enjoying the outdoors and nature's creatures to celebrating our Presidential history.

 

1. Total Sports Program

Find out what's happening in Marple Newtownwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Where/When: , Friday at 1 p.m. 

Why Go: It's an action-packed, hour-long program of sport-related activities for 3- to 5-year-olds. Your child will take part in soccer, field hockey, tag rugby, track and field, and basketball related activities.

2. Music and Mocha

Where/When: , Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.

Why Go:It's one of the best places in NewtownSquare to relax and listen to live local musicians. Matt Duke will perform with Nicole Reynolds on Friday, and there will be a special double feature on Saturday with John Mallinen, and Joshua Park with Thom McCarthy.

Pricing: Friday, $10 advance and $12 door; Saturday, $10 cover

 

3. Movie Night

Where/When: Regal Edgemont Square 10, all weekend (check website for titles and showtimes)

Why Go: This weekend, movie-goers are in store for the release of a comedy, a thriller and a science fiction film. Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son, starring Martin Lawrence, will debut as well as I Am Number Four and Unknown, starring Liam Neeson.

Pricing: Adults, $11; Children, $8 (Add a few dollars for the 3-D movies, and save a few bucks if you go before 3 p.m.)

 

4.Birds and Orchids

Where/When: Linvilla Orchards; Avian Life of the Backyard at 11 a.m. and Raptors! On Tour at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19; Linvilla Orchards is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily

Why Go: What’s better in the middle of winter than hearing birds chirping and flowers blooming? Learn what birds are passing through your backyard, and hear how to make your backyard an avian destination. Experience birds of prey, such as falcons and buzzards, up close and personal, and watch them in flight. Also in the garden center, check out the orchid show and sale that runs through March 16.

5. Celebrate the Presidents

Where/When: National Constitution Center, Philadelphia; Saturday, Feb. 19 – Monday, Feb. 21; check Web site for program times

Why Go: The National Constitution Center will celebrate our country’s 44 Commanders in Chief throughout Presidents Day weekend. Programs include “Hail to the Chief” quiz game, and “Meet the Presidents,” where visitors can meet historic presidential re-enactors and snap a photo or two.

Pricing: 12 and up, $12; under 12, $8; 65 and over, $11; Presidential programs are free with museum admission
