Celebrate the Queen's Jubilee Locally

Here are five ways to get a little British in honor of the Queen.

Queen Elizabeth II was only 25 when she became the head of state of a faltering post-war power. Today, at 86, she remains a symbol of spirit and stamina for Britain and is the oldest person to reign over the country. Only Queen Victoria, who took the throne at an earlier age, enjoyed a longer reign.

Here are five ways you can celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's 60th year on the throne, an event called the Diamond Jubilee.

  1. A Spot of Tea: Head over to for "an authentic English cafe experience," including various teas and traditional British snacks.
  2. Grab a Pint: , a neighborhood bar with a UK feel in the Manayunk-Roxborough area, could serve as a watering hole for a Boddingtons’s Pub Ale and a verse of "God Save the Queen."
  3. Take in some British Culture: The Jungle Book, first written by British Nobel laureate Rudyard Kipling in the late 1890s, is coming to the Media theatre in June and July. Check here for times and tickets for the play.
  4. Take in some More British Culture: Starring British actors Tom Wilkinson and Judi Dench, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is one of the year's most highly-acclaimed movies, according to the ratings on Rotten Tomates. See it this week at the .
  5. Have some Sheppard’s Pie: Plenty of local restaurants, including in Ardmore, offer this traditionally British meal.
