Faulty Hydraulic Spurs West Chester Pike Closure, Disrupts Market

Future discounts will be available for anyone who missed the market.

Westbound travelers on West Chester Pike faced an obstacle during Wednesday's evening rush hour that came from a faulty hydraulic and ended with the obstruction of a farmers market.

The end of the Newtown Square Farmers Market, which runs weekly from Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m at Mostardi’s Nursery on 4033 West Chester Pike, was interrupted, due to the closed road.

The road closure took place outside of the Porsche Dealership of the Main Line and along West Chester Pike from approximately 4:45 p.m. to 6 p.m.

While a carrier truck was delivering a new vehicle, the hydraulic system that unloads the car onto the side of the road failed, controller John Hediger said. While the delivery is typically a 20 minute process, the dealership needed to call two towing companies to maneuver the car instead, requiring the road closure.

The dealership was also closed until 6 p.m. as a result of the incident.

The market, which offers such items as vegetables and cooked Mediterranean cuisine and homemade desserts, was affected. According to a press release from the Pennsylvania Resources Council, which hosts the market, not all customers were deterred. Some jumped the medial strip to reach the market.

If you were unable to access the market due to the road blockade, you can contact Carol Butler of PRC at butler@prc.org for a coupon awarding $3 off of a $10 purchase. If you cannot email, you can reach her at the Wednesday, July 24 market for the coupon.
