From Poetry, Night Hike, Kicking Camp to Waltzing and a Wine Festival

From children's poetry night and night hiking to waltzing and a wine festival, there’s plenty of local fun for everyone out there this week. Check out Patch’s best bets for the week below, and then let us know of any other great local events you’re planning to attend.

Patch's Best Bets for the Week

CHILDREN'S POETRY EVENT

Where/When:  from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
Why Go: Participate in an evening of children's poetry hosted by David Mendell, a fourth grade elementary school teacher from Wallingford. All children in grades K-6 are encouraged to attend or bring a poem to share with the group.
Pricing: Free


MOSTLY WALTZ

Where/When: 's Felinton Hall from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Preceding the dance are an intermediate lesson beginning at 2:30 p.m. and a basic waltz lesson beginning at 2:45 p.m.
Why Go: Enjoy an afternoon of dancing to beautiful live music. In addition to the waltzes, the program includes other couple dances, such as swing, tango, polka, one-step, schottische, fox-trot, and more. No partner or experience needed. Live music is provided by Rhapsody Dance Band.
Pricing: Admission, including lessons, is $12 or $6 for full-time students


CLASSIC CAR AND CYCLE SHOW

Where/When:  from 11 a.m to 3 p.m.
Why Go: Admire a wide variety of classic cars and motorcycles, all 25 years or older, and then vote for your favorites. Also enjoy entertainment, refreshments, vendors and a 50/50 drawing as you stroll through beautiful Rose Tree Park. Proceeds benefit the Rotary Club of Upper Darby/Lansdowne service projects.

FAMILY NIGHT HIKE

Where/When:  at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Why Go: Experience the magic of hiking under the stars on a moon-lit night. You will learn about which animals and birds may be out at night and look to see if you can spot them. The night concludes with drinks and cookies. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight. This program is suitable for children age 5 and up.
Pricing: $6 for members, $8 for non-members, pre-registration required.


ENVIRONMENTAL FAMILY FEST

Where/WhenUpper Main Line YMCA from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Why Go: Stop by and enjoy a full slate of fun, nature-themed activities, including pond exploration, nature walks, a plant sale, youth wildlife art show, eco-exhibitors, food concessions and more. Don't miss the Elmwood Park Zoo show at 12 p.m. or the Environmental Education open house throughout the event. 
Pricing: Free


PENNS WOODS WINE FESTIVAL

Where/WhenPenns Woods Winery in Chadds Ford from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Why Go: Taste wines from your favorite local wineries. Enjoy lunch from a variety of local gourmet food vendors, mingle with the wine makers and listen to the tunes of local musicians. Admission includes seven tasting tickets and a souvenier Brandywine Valley Wine Trail wine glass for adults and face painting or airbrush tattoos for the children. There will be a silent auction with items including restaurant gift certificates, wine baskets, spa certificates and many more. Children may also participate in a 30-minute kicking camp on-site with David Akers (see below).
Pricing: Adults $25, children $5


KICKING CAMP FOR KIDS WITH DAVID AKERS

Where/WhenPenns Woods Winery in Chadds Ford from noon to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 to 2 p.m. on Saturday in conjuction with the Penns Woods Wine Festival (see above).
Why Go: Have your child meet David Akers, kicker for the Philadelphia Eagles, and practice kicking field goals. Each child will go home with a signed football and personal photograph with David Akers.
Pricing: $20 ticket includes free entry into the wine and food pavillion (must be accompanied by an adult). Space is limited.
