Long-Standing Jewelers Retire, Close Store

Newtown Square says goodbye to Wallace Jewelers, which has been in the community for the past 15 years.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–Charlene Krantz fondly remembers seeing generations of families grow up when they periodically came into her jewelry store over the years. But after 15 years of business in Newtown Township–and 30 in Southeastern Pennsylvania–Krantz and her husband Steven are closing their store for good.

When Charlene and Steven signed the lease for Wallace Jewelers, located at 351 West Chester Pike, about 10 years ago, Steven hoped it would be their last before retirement.

That lease is now up and since neither of the couples two children wanted to take over the business, it'll be closing for good.

"It’s the next phase of life [for us]," said Charlene. "[We're going to] have fun, play more golf, get better at bridge, travel and spend time with our grandson."

Charlene's daughter, Alisa Katz, is also looking at a new life after the business closes.

"I’ve been full-time here since 1997," she said. "As it’s approaching ,it’s becoming real and it’s becoming a bit more emotional."

Charlene said several customers have expressed disappointment to see the business go.

"We’ve had lots of people come in and say, 'I’m so sorry that you’re leaving,'" she said. "One woman called and said she saw the [going out of business] sign and got physically sick."

But Charlene, a Newtown Square resident, said she hopes to see customers around town like norma–especially at the ACME across the street wher she does her grocery shopping.
