More Service Expected for Local MetroPCS Customers

The Marple Zoning Hearing Board recently approved MetroPCS's application add their network on cellular tower at Delaware County Community College.

BROOMALL–Local MetroPCS users may find some relief in the area for network services as the cellphone company was recently granted access to add their network on top of an existing 138-foot cellular network tower at campus.

The unanimously approved MetroPCS's application to expand the existing compound of the monopole by 264-square-feet to accommodate their equipment.

According to the application, the project will consist of collocating six antennas on top of the tower that is owned by AT&T. In addition, three equipment cabinets will installed on a proposed 10-feet by 16-feet concrete pad, in which it will be protected by an 11-foot by 24-foot fence.

Nicholas Cuce, Jr., the attorney representing MetroPCS, said MetroPCS will add one more antenna to the already exisiting five antennas on the tower in which the antenna will be at most 121-feet in height.

"We will not be extending the present height of the tower in any way," assured Cuce.

"So in essence, you're just putting another arm on it [cellphone tower]," responded John Liadis, board member.

Frank Degenova, a representative of MetroPCS, said approximately 12 additional cables will run along the tower for MetroPCS and the tower is currently at a 55 percent structural capacity from its total potential usage.

Walter Pierzchala, board member, raised his concerns about the safety of the cables during an ice and wind storm.

"We do carry insurance and we have to make sure that it is safe," said Degenova. "But to be clear, AT&T owns the tower and is responsible for the structure itself."

The application was approved with the promise of cleaning and restoring the area around the tower.
