Viva Cinco de Mayo

Marple Newtown Patch offers some ideas for you and your family and friends to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

Patch’s weekly feature, Patch Picks, highlights editor and reader picks of great local businesses, destinations, services, organizations, ways to spend a day off, and more.

This week we’re talking about the observance of Cinco de Mayo. The holiday commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The date is observed in the U.S. as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Cities and towns across the nation mark the Mexican victory through authentic food, drink, dancing and crafts. There are plenty of ways we can all take part, and Marple Newtown Patch has a few fun ideas for you.

This is a favorite for Delaware County diners. The Mexican food is authentic and they serve everything from tortilla soup to nachos to enchiladas. It’s fairly priced, and a BYO, so feel free to bring your tequila and they’ll mix up the margaritas. You can also enjoy the Spanish singers while you dine.

Dos Gringos Mexican Kitchen

They’re the new kids in town, and they’ve sure made a stellar first impression in Media. Dos Gringos Mexican Kitchen opened up last month and have packed the house since. Word on the street is that the breakfast and lunch selections have been outstanding. Burritos, fajitas and tacos top the list according to diners. They haven’t officially opened for dinner yet, but on Cinco de Mayo, they will be serving a special menu. Check out the website for details. Don’t forget, it’s a BYO, so be sure to bring your tequila or rum and they’ll mix the margaritas and mojitos.

The Deck at Harbor Pointe

If you’re into the club scene, this is the place to be. The Deck will feature Q102 live from 6 p.m. until midnight. Jay Sean will perform his hits “Down,” “Do you Remember,” and more. Margaritas will be on special for $4, and you can keep the shaker. Plus, there will be a full Mexican menu if you’re hungry.

Koffee Korner

It’s not just for breakfast. in Media has been serving up Mexican Night for the past couple of years on Thursday evenings. You can nestle into an indoor seat, or grab a table outside when it’s nice out. You can bring your own margaritas, beers or wine, or whatever your mood your mood may be. Nightly entrée selections vary, but the reviews are always right on the mark.

The Plumstead Inn

is always a good bet for a good time, no matter what the celebration. With all of the big screen TVs, it’s a great place to catch the Phillies game. Grab a bite, and grab a $3 Corona or $3 margarita.

Family Friendly Fiesta

If you’re looking for some family fun that is relatively inexpensive, create a Mexican fiesta right at home, complete with the food and decorations. You can find so many different ideas online, for example on kaboose.com. There are all kinds of recipes from chunky guacamole to Mexican tortilla soup.
