Delco Heritage Awards–Triple Play

Newtown residents/projects win three Historic Preservation awards from Delaware County Heritage Commission.

Three Newtown Square area people or projects were awarded preservation awards by the Delaware County Heritage Commission at the May 3 meeting of the Delaware County Council.  The awards are given to recognize those people and groups in the county who have made a significant contribution to the general public knowledge and awareness of Delaware County History. Our winners this year included:

Bronwyn Livezey, a high school sophomore, won the first ever Youth Award for her volunteer work (over 200 hours) for the –school tours, summer guide, performing at Colonial Day and other events–and as co-chair of the Education Committee.  At 15, and with 10 years of volunteering under her belt, Bronwyn has set an example for what one person can do to give back to the community.

Carol Schaeffer, Newtown’s resident artist, won an award for Publications, with her Scenes Around Newtown Square:  From the Not-so-Distant Past, a compilation of paintings that she has done on historic buildings and scenes in and around Newtown.  Carol sees the building as it currently is, then researches its history, and develops a scene that puts the building back in its historic setting.  You can purchase the book at the following location:  http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/1052476 .

George D. Conn, Christopher P. Driscoll, Eris D. Gerst and Douglas P. Humes, won a Publication Award as well for the book Bartram Covered Bridge: Spanning History.  Driscoll and I have been the society’s vice president and president, respectively, for the last four years.  They joined forces with Willistown residents Conn and Gerst to research, write, edit and publish the book on the 150th anniversary of the Bartram Bridge.  The book is available for purchase at the Society’s website and all proceeds are donated for the repair of the bridge.

People make the difference in a community.  Each person can give back to the community at any age. We have a wealth of resources in Newtown, in our places, our history, and our people, and we are fortunate to have talented people who remind us of what we have, and what we each can do.  We celebrate these people who have made a difference.  Congratulations to all of our winners!
