Making History on June 4th at Historic Newtown Square Day

A celebration of community and history at Historic Newtown Square Day on Saturday June 4th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Newtown Square Historical Preservation Society is hosting the annual community celebration of local history at Historic Newtown Square Day on Saturday June 4th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The central focus will be the public green behind the Square Tavern, where over 30 merchants, vendors and community groups will be vying for your attention (see vendor list below).

There will be attractions for parents and children.  In addition to this public market, you can bring your attic treasures to have them reviewed by Wilson Antiques (from 1-3 p.m.).  Bring a lawn chair and enjoy some Bluegrass music.  Tour the Square Tavern with Benjamin West, whose father was the tavern keeper prior to the American Revolution.

Newtown has five historic sites that are on the National Register of Historic Places, and they will be open as well, with guides who can give their history:  the Square Tavern, the Paper Mill House and Museum, the Bartram Covered Bridge, the Octagonal School, and the old St. David’s Church.

Newtown has a wonderful railroad museum as well – come out and check out the amazing progress than has been made in restoring the antique rail cars, and then explore the railroad history museum in the preserved Newtown Square freight station building that was saved from demolition years ago and moved to the Drexel Lodge property and restored.  This year is also the 300th anniversary of the Newtown Square Friends Meeting.  Come see the architectural ghost of that 1711 meeting house, and walk in the cemetery containing memories of Newtown’s earliest settlers.

Come out and enjoy your community and its events, rather than watching them on TV, reading about them in the newspaper, or hearing about them from friends.  Invite family and friends.  The event supports the mission of the Newtown Square Historical Preservation Society to educate the community on local history and the importance of preserving and using the historic buildings that we are fortunate to have in the Community.   These buildings exist because people throughout our history have cared enough to preserve them and hand them down to the next generation.  You join those people who care when you lend a hand in the effort.
