UPDATE: PennDOT Reopens Route 252

PennDOT announced on Monday, Sept. 12, that the portion previously closed on Route 252 reopened as of Sunday night.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–The Newtown Street Road in between Troop Farm Road and Dudie Drive reopened on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 11 p.m., said Eugene Blaum, assistant press secretary of The Pennsylvania Department of Transporation (PennDOT).

On Friday evening, Blaum said, "They'll [PennDOT crews] work through the weekend and we're expecting to have Rt. 252 reopened–weather permitting–by Tuesday."

The road closure is due to a collapsed drainage pipe that caused severe damage to the pavement earlier this week sometime Wednesday. According to Blaum, the pavement sank about a foot below the earth.

"The pavement sustained more damage so we closed the roadway," said Blaum over a phone message on Friday evening.

According to Blaum, crews have started preliminary work on Friday and continued working throughout the weekend.

"The contractor began doing preliminary work taking down the guardrail and mobilizing equipment," said Blaum. The delivery of two large drainage pipes are scheduled to come in on Saturday and work to install the pipes into the roadway will begin immediately after.

Crews backfilled the area as well as repaired and resurfaced the 150-foot length of the damaged pavement on Rt. 252.

During that time, the area was closed off to through traffic but local traffic was able to access their home or business. A detour had also been set up on West Chester Pike/Rt. 3 and Media Line Road, a quarter-mile south of the damaged area.
