Senior Driving Facts and Figures

AAA Mid-Atlantic recognized the week–from Dec. 5-9–as Older Driver Safety Awarenes Week.

According to AAA Mid-Atlantic, one in four licensed drivers will be 65 and older in less than 10 years which, in turn, will mean that "millions of American families will be working through the challenge of keeping older drivers mobile and safe."

In 2009 AAA Mid-Atlantic reports, nationwide, according to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA):

• 5,288–Number of seniors age 65 and older were killed in traffic crashes
• 16–Percentage of seniors representing all traffic fatalities
• 187,000–Number of seniors injured in traffic crashes
• 246–Number of fatalities of older drivers aged 65 and oer who were involved in crashes in Pennsylvania

The 2010 U.S. Census Bureau reports:

• 1,959,307–The number of senior drivers aged 65 and older in Pennsylvania
• 15.4–Percentage of more senior drivers (aged 65 and older) in Pennsylvania from 2000 to 2010
• 79,726–The number of senior drivers aged 65 and older in Delaware County
• 14.3–Percentage of more senior drivers (aged 65 and older) in Delaware County from 2000 to 2010
• 5,062–The number of senior drivers aged 65 and older in
• 4.6–Percentage of senior drivers (aged 65 and older) in Marple in comparison to its total population of 23,428
• 2,706–The number of senior drivers aged 65 and older in
• Percentage of senior drivers (aged 65 and older) in Newtown in comparison to its total population of 12,216
