Severe Thunderstorm and Flash Flood Watches For Friday Evening

Severe thunderstorms could pop up quickly with a possibility of flash floods.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued both a severe thunderstorm watch and a flash flood watch for all of Delaware and Chester counties.

The severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 9 p.m. Friday night. The flash flood watch is in effect until "late Friday night."  It is the second night in a row when conditions are favorable for intense storm cells to form.

A NWS statement on the severe thunderstorm watch says "scattered to numerous thunderstorms will develop across the area late this afternoon and remain into the overnight period. They are expected to produce one half to one inch of rain with localized amounts of 2-4 inches possible."

The ground in most places is already saturated from the heavy rains yesterday and earlier this week. A flash flood watch means "that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding."

You can read the full severe storm and flash flood watch statements here on the weather service's website.
