The Colorado Tragedy: Stricter Firearm Laws Needed

The Colorado massacre can happen anywhere at anytime if we do not stop people from buying guns. Stricter firearm laws are needed now.

Now that the picture of the Colorado's monster who killed 12 people is pasted all over the TV and in newspapers throughout this country, it is safe to say that what happened in Colorado can easily happen in our own neighborhoods because looking at this individual who by all accounts seems to be as normal as any of us, it is easy to see why some of these individuals go unnoticed until a crime is committed such as the one in Colorado and in other places.

In recent years, we have witnessed this kind of rampage in schools, in the workplace, in government establishments and now even in a movie theater.  Are we safe anywhere? Well, based on the occurrence in Colorado and other places around this country the basic answer to that question is, no!

It is, at the very least a very sad commentary for our democratic society where these kind of tragedies can happen anywhere at anytime due to what I believe is, our inability to enforce the gun laws and other firearms requirements already in place that prevent arms of mass destruction from being obtained by unstable individuals.

From what we have learned about this latest rampage in Colorado, James Holmes, the culprit in this case was able to buy 6000-round of ammunition online without anyone asking the  question of why this person needed to amass such an arsenal.

This arsenal included 3,000 rounds of handgun ammunition, 3,000 rounds for an assault rifle and 350 shells for a 12-gauge shotgun without raising any suspicion from the authorities and was able to buy all this destructive material without any background check or any government oversight.

Are we joking?

Why are the gun and firearm laws already on the books not adhere to by these unscrupulous gun dealers who care more about making a buck than protecting the people of this country.

Holmes accordingly was able to buy all this war gear without arousing suspicion from law enforcement officials even though this individual was making these large purchases of ammunition.

It is time for action in this country because we cannot continue to be shocked everytime an incident such as this one occurs in some part of our beloved country. It is time to act not react every time something like this happens only to be repeated at a later time at some other location because of our continued failure to enforce the laws judiciously and uniformly throughout this country.

It is unreal and obscene to hear someone say that in Colorado, a person can make these large purchases of ammunition without federal law requirement or even a background check of the individual making these purchases. It is insanity to continue on this road of a lax attitude toward gun's purchases and other firearms.

We must, once and for all establish new guidelines uniformly throughout this country so that an individual such as Holmes will not be able to amass such an arsenal in the future. We must stop reacting and begin a proactive approach to the problem of gun ownership in this country.

It is time for the gun lobbyists of America to stop hiding behind the second amendment and do the right thing for the American people. We can no longer condone the free proliferation of guns especially assault rifles that when placed in the hands of demented people can cause great harm to innocent men, women and children.

Enough is enough. We need stricter gun laws in this country.
