Sarah Murnaghan Recovers After 2nd Transplant; 1st Failed

Sarah Murnaghan's family revealed Friday that the 10 year old's first lung transplant failed hours after the surgery.

Sarah Murnaghan's family revealed Friday that the 10 year old's first lung transplant failed hours after the surgery and she has been recovering from a second transplant that she received days later.

"We weren't prepared to live out her dying in public," Janet Murnaghan, Sarah's mother, explained in a press conference as to why the second transplant was not publicly revealed.

Sarah, who has end-stage Cystic Fibrosis and fought to be placed on the adult transplant list, received her first transplant at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia on June 12 but the lungs began to fail within hours of the transplant, according to NBCPhiladelphia.com.

The lungs were removed, Sarah was placed on a bypass machine and placed back on the donor list.

Sarah's body did not reject the lungs but failed her because they were poor quality lungs, according to NBCPhiladelphia.com.

On June 15, a second set of lungs became available and the Newtown Square girl received a second transplant.

Sarah continues to recover. She is still on a ventilator however she is communicating. She is expected to undergo another surgery next week to fix parts of her diagram, according to NBCPhiladelphia.com.
