From Girls' Night Out, Hoops from the Heart to Home Show

Patch has some ideas for events and activities this upcoming holiday weekend.

For most of us, it’s a long holiday weekend as we mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday. Government offices and schools are closed to mark the remembrance day. From sporting events to music and art, there are plenty of fun things to keep you and your family busy.

1. Adult Open Volleyball

Where/When:  ; Sun., Jan. 15, at 6:30 p.m.

Why Go: The community center gym is open for three hours of fun volleyball play. The program runs through April 15. Call 610-353-2326 in case of inclement weather and to confirm holiday dates.

2. MLK Day “Hoops From the Heart”

Where/When:  Various schools in Delaware County; Mon., Jan. 16, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Why Go: Five basketball clinics will be held to raise funds and food donations for the Community Action Agency of Delaware County, Inc., the county’s anti-poverty agency that helps families and individuals to move toward self-sufficiency. The clinics will be held at Cabrini College in Radnor, Haverford College in Haverford, Neumann University in Aston, Widener University in Chester, and Springfield High School.

Pricing: Cost for the clinic is $30 per player which includes a t-shirt. Participants are asked to bring one non-perishable food item to donate as well. For information about the 11th annual “Hoops From the Heart” event contact Debbie Lamborn at CAADC at (484) 802-7708. 

 

3.Girls' Night Out at Salsa in the Suburbs

Where/When: Salsa in the Suburbs, 1245 N. Providence Rd., Media; Fri., Jan. 13 at 7 p.m.

Why Go: Guests choose two options from a variety of dance classes, from Salsa Styling to Flirtastic Fitness to Zumba. There will be complimentary refreshments and it’s BYOB. Also, ladies will be treated to manicures, massages and other surprises.

4. 2nd Saturday Arts Stroll

Where/When: State Street in Media; Sat., Jan. 14, at 6 p.m.

Why Go:  The monthly event organized by the Media Arts Council is a family-friendly event featuring art, live music and other exciting activities. There will be live entertainment at many of the restaurants, cafes, galleries and shops, including , who will perform at . The featured artist is Rinal Parikh, who artwork reflects the heritage and culture of her native India. Her exhibit will be at . For a full map, go to MAC’s website.

5. Philadelphia Home Show

Where/When:  Pennsylvania Convention Center; Sat., Jan. 14, through Sun., Jan. 22; Check website for daily hours.

Why Go: Find anything and everything you need for home improvement and decorating  projects. Talk to experts for fresh ideas and smart advice. Celebrity guests include Todd Davis of HGTV’s Room Crashers and Kimberly Lacy of HGTV’s Curb Appeal. Check out the website for all the vendor information.

Pricing: $13 for adults; $3 for kids six to 12; Free for kids five and under
