From 'Oliver!' to and Opera and Bridal Extravaganza
Patch offers some ideas for the upcoming weekend for you and the family.
There are many great theatre productions at the local venues throughout the Patch area, including a Charles Dickens’ classic. Brides-to-be can one-stop-shop in Drexel Hill at the VIP Magazine bridal show. Or, if you have cabin fever and want to get outdoors, Tyler Arboretum has a program to help you spruce up your yard in time for spring.
1. “Musical Perspectives”
Where/When: The home of Barbara and Matthew Cohen, 2207 Windsor Circle, Broomall; Sun., Jan. 29, 2 p.m.

Why Go: The Delaware County Symphony will present the program featuring Michael Bolton, the Director of Community Programs with the Opera Company of Philadelphia. "Musical Perspectives" is an annual event for speakers to discuss topics of broad interest and to share their experiences with music lovers. A reception will follow the program featuring gourmet desserts and refreshments. All are welcome. Call 610-356-3527 for reservations.

2. Necessary Targets
Where/When: Swarthmore United Methodist Church; Fri., Jan. 27, and Sat., Jan. 28, at 8 p.m. and Sun., Jan. 29 at 2 p.m.
Why Go: The Marple Newtown Players present this production that “is a timely reminder of how America struggles to define its relationship with the rest of the world.” Two American women, a Park Avenue psychiatrist and an ambitious young writer, travel to Bosnia to help women refugees confront memories of war time.
Pricing: General admission: $30, seniors: $25.
3. Winter Pruning Workshop
Where/When: Tyler Arboretum; Sat., Jan. 28, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Why Go: suggests winter is the perfect season for pruning your shrubs and trees which have lost their leaves. Learn how to give new life to old, overgrown shrubs, or prune to enhance the beauty and function of your plants. Director of Horticulture Mike Karkowski will teach indoors and demonstrate outside.
Pricing: $12 for members, $15 for non-members (pre-registration required).
4. Oliver!
Where/When: ; Fri., Jan. 27, at 7:30 p.m. and Sat., Jan. 28, at 4 p.m.
Why Go: The classical musical based on Charles’ Dickens’ 1838 novel Oliver Twist will be performed by the Hedgerow Theatre School. This weekend’s shows are the final performances. The production features a multi-generational cast and familiar scores, including Food, Glorious Food and I’d Do Anything.
Pricing: Adults: $20, children: $10.
5. VIP Magazine and Drexelbrook Bridal Show
Where/When: Drexelbrook Catering & Banquet; Sun., Jan. 29, noon to 4 p.m.
Why Go: Brides and grooms-to-be will find everything to start planning their wedding. Vendors include photographers, videographers, transportation companies, florists, DJs, bands, bakeries, tuxedos, bridal gowns, salons and spas, invitations and favors. There will be food tasting and a fashion show. There will be prizes and giveaways, including a chance to win a gown from VanCleve’s Wedding Pavillion.
Pricing: $5 advance online registration, $10 per person at the door
