What Are Some of Your Favorite Summer Camps in the Area?

This week's question:

Q: I'm starting to look for a summer day camp in the area. Are there any that are highly recommended?

Answer from Kara Buchy (mom of 2): offers week-long camps for children. Last year, my children attended a science camp and sports camp and loved them. I can’t wait to find out what the St. Pius Summer Enrichment programs will be this year. I hear the second year has even more opportunities for students in fine arts, academics, and athletics. Parents love the flexible schedule (half day and full day and even some camps where parents can choose which days in the week where their children attend). The teachers and student assistants are nurturing, knowledgeable, and make summer fun for kids.

Answer from Sarah Grossman (mom of 2): Arrowhead Day Camp and Wayne Art Center both offer camps.

Answer from Susan McAnally (mom of 3): St. Annies does a week-long summer camp and it runs two sessions in June and the kids absolutely love it. It is from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for ages 3 to 6. I believe also has a great summer camp that runs weekly sessions for the same age group.

Answer from Jennifer Ferry (mom of 2): For a week-long theater camp experience, we like Camp Curtain Call. They hold a one week camp in July at St. Dennis in Havertown. I also recommend for ages 3-5. They offer 1-6 weeks of half-day camp starting in the beginning of July. And for those of you looking for an all-day camp for ages 5 and up, 8 a.m to 4 p.m., Marple Sports Arena in Broomall. Makin' Music also has a great day camp.

Answer from Bretany Pilko (mom of 2): The science camp atwas the first camp experience my boys ever had and it was a blast. It was five days long, half days. Each day they covered a different scientific area – like air or water. The kids were happy and I was happy because I knew they were in great hands. I also put the boys at the Upper Main Line YMCA day camp for a week. They offer swim lessons at camp. Unfortunately, my youngest was so afraid of the pool that he never went in the pool for five days straight. That was extremely disappointing.

Answer from Merrie (mom of 3): My kids love going to Camp Treasure Island at . It's for kids in K-5th grade and they do crafts, water days, theme days and learn a bible lesson through fun skits that continue the whole week. It ends with a program Friday night for the whole family where the kids sing, the skit is completed and they show a slide show with pictures from the week. My kids also enjoy the bible school at . They start the kids at age 3. My kids really enjoy the cooking portion of the camp. It is in the evenings the week of Aug 15. Another great camp is the dance camp at dance studio. The girls dance, do crafts and learn about healthy habits. It usually runs once a week for four weeks beginning after July 4.
