Wrong Way Crash on I-76 Kills 2

A vehicle was traveling the wrong way down the Blue Route in the early-morning hours Friday, police say.

Two people are dead following a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 476 early Friday morning.

According to Pennsylvania State Police-Media Barracks, Kent Michael Gans, 50, of Philadelphia and Paul R. Wallendorf, 62, of Delaware City, Del., were pronounced dead at the scene.

A gold Oldsmobile Royale, driven by the now deceased Gans, was traveling on I-476 southbound near mile marker 8 in Marple Township in the northbound lanes of travel at about 3:42 a.m. Friday, according to State Police.

The Oldsmobile then struck a green Chevrolet Venture, in the left lane, head on, according to State Police.

Both vehicles had come to a stop on the roadway when both were then struck by a Mack tractor-trailer and a Volvo tractor-trailer that were attempting to swerve from the crash, according to State Police.

The Gans and Wallendorf were pronounced dead at the scene by Haverford EMS at 3:54 a.m. Friday, according to State Police.

Drivers of both the tractor-trailers were not injured.

All lanes of the highway were closed for several hours, from Exit 5 (U.S. Route 1) to Exit 9 (Broomall), while crews cleared the crash and it reopened around 7 a.m. Friday, according to NBCPhiladelphia.com.

The crash is under investigation.
