NEWTOWN SQUARE–On Jan. 2 at approximately 4:40 p.m., Newtown police was stopped facing eastbound on West Chester Pike/Route 3 at the intersection of Newtown Street Road/Route 252 in the left lane when they observed an Infiniti stopped in the right lane with a December 2012 registration sticker.
As police began to travel eastbound on West Chester Pike, police began to run the vehicle’s registration through the NCIC system which confirmed that the registration had been expired at the end of December 2012.
Police then initiated a vehicle stop on the Infiniti and activated their emergency lights and siren, just as the vehicle was pulling into the entrance of the Newtown Square Shopping Center.
According to the report, police observed the vehicle pull into a parking space in front of the Alliance Bank and noticed the driver pull into two separate parking stalls. When police approached the vehicle, they spoke with the driver, identified as a 42-year-old resident of Willistown, and noticed the driver’s side window broken. According to the report, the driver had to open the driver's side door to speak with police.
Police immediately detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the man when the man opened the door, according to the report. When the man was gathering his driver’s license and vehicle documents, the man told police, “I’m going to be honest, sir, I just had a couple o f beers,” according to the report.
When police asked the man how many beers he had, the man said, “Just two from the case here,” to which he pointed to a case of beer on his passenger seat, according to the report.
Police asked the man to exit the vehicle and perform a few sobriety field tests. According to the report, the man only passed oen sobriety test satisfactorily. The man was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence.
Upon further investigation of the vehicle, police detected four empty beer cans in the front passenger seat floor area and five more empty beer cans on the floor in the back seat of the vehicle. The man was arrested and charged for DUI and Registration and Certificate of Title Required.
