Blotter: Speeding Motorcyclist Tries To Elude Cops, Fails

The following information was provided by the Newtown Township Police Department. Any arrests or charges mentioned do not indicate guilt or conviction.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–On Sept. 28 at approximately 4 p.m., Newtown police was traveling south on Bishop Hollow Road around the intersection of Campus and Stoneybrook boulevards. During this time, police observed a motorcyclist turning left onto Bishop Hollow Road from Campus Boulevard and traveling north directly behind another vehicle.

According to the report, the motorcyclist abruptly cut off the vehicle in front of him over the double yellow line where the roadway was going uphill toward a crest. Police made a U-turn to stop the motorcycle. 

When the motorcycle hit the intersection of Bishop Hollow Road and West Chester Pike/Rt. 3, there was heavy traffic congestion, according to the report. The motorcyclist then drove through Liberty gas station to cut through the traffic that was heading eastbound, according to the report.

Police activated their emergency lights in attempt to stop the motorcycle at which time the motorcyclist began to speed at a high rate of speed through a steady red light at the intersection of Rt. 3 and Newtown Street Road/Rt. 252, according to the report.

According to the report, police observed the vehicle traveled along the yellow broken line between both eastbound lanes or Rt. 3. In addition, the motorcyclist was observed traveling on both the right-side berm and the middle of the roadway between designated lanes and other vehicles, said police in the report.

Police reported reaching 75mph while trying to catch the motorcyclist, according to the report. Police were unable to pursue the chase due to safety concerns but Marple police were able to able to catch the motorcylclist a couple of minutes later, according to the report.

The motorcyclist was identified as a 23-year-old from Philadelphia. According to the report, the motorcyclist's license was expired in January 2012 and it was also discovered that it was suspended. When police asked the man why he fled, the motorcyclist responded, "My license is suspended."

The motorcyclist faces charges of Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude Officer, Drivers Required to Be Licensed, Driving While Operating Privilege is Suspended, Limitations on Driving on the Left Side of the Roadway, Maximum Speed Limits Established Zones, Operating Motorcycles on Roadways Laned For Traffic, and Reckless Driving.
