UPDATE: County Courthouse Reopens After Bomb Threat

MEDIA–The was evacuated Tuesday morning for about three hours due to a bomb threat.

Delaware County Executive Director Marianne Grace said a bomb threat was called in to the 911 center at about 9:25 a.m. Tuesday.

She said the caller indicated there was a bomb in the basement and the second floor of the courthouse and it would go off at 10:30 a.m.

The courthouse was evacuated and multiple police, sheriff and K-9 units were brought in to search the building and surrounding areas.

Employees and the general public were permitted to return to the courthouse just before 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Grace said only one bomb threat was received by telephone however, the caller said the threat was intended for Monday but because the courthouse was closed for the Memorial Day holiday, the caller said the threat was for Tuesday instead.

There was not an earlier bomb threat over the weekend, Grace explained, there was only one phone call.

Delaware County Sheriff Joseph McGinn said no bomb was found in the courthouse.

The District Attorney's Office and Criminal Investigation Unit are now investigating the incident.

On any given day, thousands of employees, prisoners, families and patrons could be inside the county courthouse, Grace said.

Downtown Media was full of people roaming around deciding what to do while they waited to return to work or court. Employees were instructed that they would likely be able to return to work by 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Bill Toal, who works in the District Attorney's Office, said the first day of the work week is always a busy one for the courthouse.

"Every courtroom was full," Toal said. "This is not a good way to start the week."

Vehicles that were parked in the courthouse garage and on streets surrounding the courthouse were also not permitted to move.

Sheriff's officers instructed people who were attempting to walk to their vehicles that they couldn't be moved until the K-9 units completed their search.
