Driver Found Sleeping After Hitting Pole, Police Say

Police charge the driver with driving under the influence of alcohol.

A Delaware County man is facing charges after police said he hit a utility pole on the 300 block of Madison Road in Springfield Township and didn’t stop.

Ptlm. Stephen Hurwitz arrived on the scene and found the striking vehicle in the 100 block of Sherman Road, according to the police report. The vehicle, which had heavy front end damage, was idling and the operator appeared to be sleeping, police said.

The 25-year-old Broomall driver appeared to be intoxicated, police said, and so he was taken to Springfield Hospital, had blood drawn, and was then transported to the Springfield Police Station.

He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and related motor vehicle violations and was later released to a relative.

Police said no one was injured in the incident. The incident is under investigation by Detective Robert Nutley.
