Ex-Episcopal Teacher Admits to Molesting Student, Court Documents Say

A former camp counselor who was indicted on rape and other charges stemming from alleged incidents at a Massachusetts Christian camp more than 30 years ago admitted to also molesting one of his Episcopal students, according to published reports.

, indecent assault and battery and five counts of indecent assault and battery upon a child under the age of 14, according to a press release issued by Massachusetts District Attorney Michael O’Keefe.

The 65-year-old Media man, who taught at Episcopal Academy for 20 years, allegedly sexually abused four children in 1981 when he was a youth camp counselor in Massachusetts.

Smith, who is also a 1966 graduate of Episcopal, taught at the school from 1970 to 1990 and then worked in the development office until 1998, according to philly.com.

Smith allegedly told investigators he molested a fourth-grade student around 1977 while they were in his car and admitted the incident to the head of the school, according to court documents obtained by the Philadelphia Inquirer. The student later reported the abuse, according to philly.com.

After his admission, he was removed from teaching but kept on in the school's development office, according to philly.com.

Episcopal spokesman Bill Doherty told the Delaware County Daily Times the school is already investigating Smith's time at the school because of his Massachusetts arrest.

Smith was arraigned and held on $10,000 cash bail. He is due back in court May 8 for appearance of counsel.
