Man Flips Van, Results in DUI Arrest

An Upper Providence Township man was arrested and charged in connection with driving under the influence after he crashed his van in Newtown Square, according to Newtown Township Police. 

On Dec. 22 at about 1:31 a.m. police responded to Gradyville and Bishop Hollow roads for a report of car crash and found a white Chevrolet van off the roadway on Bishop Hollow Road on its roof, according to police, and nobody was inside the van.

As police looked around the area for the driver, a 48-year-old Upper Providence Township man came walking up to the scene and told police he as the owner and driver of the van, according to police.

The man told police he was walking to his brother’s house after the crash but came back to the scene when he saw the emergency lights, according to police.

The man said he was traveling south on Bishop Hollow Road when he somehow ended up leaving the roadway, went down an embankment and the van rolled over, according to police.

The man had a bump on his forehead and a small cut on the bridge of his nose, according to police, he was evaluated on the scene by EMS and refused transport to the hospital.

As police spoke with him, they could smell an odor of alcohol on his breath and when he was questioned about it, the man told police he had consumed three rum drinks in the course of an hour, according to police.

Police also observed that the man's eyes were glassy, his speech was slurred and he was unsteady on this feet, according to police.

The man provided a breath sample into a PBAT machine which resulted in a .11 percent reading, according to police.

He was arrested and charged with careless driving and DUI and transported to Springfield Hospital where a blood sample was taken into evidence and he was then transported to Marple Police station for processing and provided a courtesy ride home, according to police.
