Manatee Mailbox Mangled by Small Explosive, Police Say

Newtown Township Police investigate criminal mischief complaints, including the explosion of a manatee-style mailbox that cost $500.

Newtown Township Police are investigating several complaints of criminal mischief in recent weeks. One incident involved the explosion of a resident's manatee-style mailbox.

In the Larchmont section of Newtown Township, police have received complaints of criminal mischief to a mailbox, lamppost, and landscape lighting, each occurring overnight.

It is believed that the damage was done by juveniles, according to Newtown Police.

On June 26, a Main Street resident reported to police that her manatee mailbox appeared to have been damaged by a small explosive charge, according to police.

The victim told police that she heard a bang around 3 a.m. but saw nothing and wasn’t really sure where the noise came from, according to police, but in the morning she noticed the door of the mailbox was blown apart.

The mailbox was a custom fiberglass manatee that cost $500, according to police. The resident told police that the company that made the mailbox is no longer in business and it cannot be replaced.

On July 1, a Papermill Road resident told police that he walked out to his mailbox that morning and discovered it was damaged, according to police.

The mailbox stand was split in half and there was a small dent on the mailbox itself, according to police.
