Marple Police To Hold National Night Out

Marple Township Police Department to participate in the 29th Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event Aug. 7.

BROOMALL–The recently announced the department will be participating in the 29th Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event on Aug. 7 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

"It started about 20 years ago and its purpose was to get people out and interacting with another, paying attention to what their surroundings are, what's going on in their community when it comes to crime," explained Marple Police Chief Tom Murray. "Look out for each other and get involved."

According to Murray, this year will be the first year the department will participate in the national initiative.

The crime prevention outdoor fair will be held at the . at 10 N. Malin Rd. Equipment will be on display from the police, fire and EMS departments in town as well as food and games for children. The event will be held rain or shine.

National Night Out is designed to: heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; general support, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts; strengthen community spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that communities are organized and fighting back.

In addition to the Marple Township Police Department, National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and involves over 15,325 communities from across the nation, including Canadian cities and military bases around the world.

According to police, over 37.1 million people are expected to participate in this year's "America's Night Out Against Crime."
