UPDATE: Police Investigating Overturned Trash Truck That Trapped Two in Marple

A two-vehicle crash involving an Upper Darby municipal garbage truck on Reed Road and Marpit Drive in Broomall, sends five to the hospital on July 26.

BROOMALL– are investigating the two-vehicle car crash that occurred on Tuesday morning, involving an overturned garbage truck at the intersection of Reed Road and Marpit Drive in .

Marple police responded to the scene of the crash at 10:48 a.m. Upon arrival to the scene, police said they located an Upper Darby municipal trash truck on its side on top of a 2003 four-door Honda Accord, trapping the driver and passenger inside, according to Lt. Frank Hannigan of Marple Township Police.

"The car had stopped at a stop sign coming down Marpit Drive, while the trash truck was coming down Reed Road and was turning right on Marpit Drive," explained Hannigan. "That's when the crash occurred."

It took crews approximately one hour to remove the trapped driver from the Honda, Marple police stated in a press release issued out on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The Accord's doors were sawed off during the rescue of the driver and passenger at the time of the crash. The front and back windshields were also observed to be completely smashed through and non-existent.

According to Hannigan, three passengers in the municipal waste truck were taken to Delaware County Memorial Hospital for observation. The driver of the Honda Accord likely sustained the "most serious" injury, said Hannigan. The driver was flown by helicopter and transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, while his wife, was taken to Crozer-Chester Hospital.

The helicopter landed at , according to Broomall Fire Co. Chief Carl Drake, where the driver was then transported to the hospital.

More than a dozen first responders were on scene of the crash. Marple Township Police, , , , Upper Providence Township Police, Manoa Ambulance Corps, Manoa Fire Co., Haverford Township paramedics, Llanerch Ambulance Corps, and Springfield Fire Co. all responded to the scene.

Portions of Reed Road between Parkway Drive and Eagle Road were closed to traffic for approximately an hour and a half. Roads opened at around 12:40 p.m. Keyes Towing was on scene to tow the vehicles.

Police said there is no further information available concerning the
status of those injured during the crash.
